Entry VOIP: Emerging Regulartory Framework

Editor 2005-02-03

CANBERRA -- A discussion paper has been released by DCITA towards a regulatory framework for Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP).

"VOIP works by converting your voice into a digital signal (using Internet Protocol packets) that can travel over the Internet via a broadband connection. Typically the voice call is encoded and decoded by software on your personal computer or a standalone device such as an analogue telephone adaptor (ATA). (An ATA plugs into your broadband modem and you plug your phone into the ATA.) You can also make calls from your PC using a 'softphone' (software downloaded to your computer) and a headset."
